Diagnosis With Alopecia Areata

Since he was three, Anthony Carrigan has had Alopecia Areata (an auto-immune disease that causes severe hair loss).

In the beginning, he only had a few bald spots and was very manageable. But, by the time the actor reached his 20s, the symptoms massively increased, which led to losing all his hair, including eyelashes and eyebrows.

The Barry star also revealed that he hid his disease from almost everyone, including his closest friends, for a long time.

First, it was embarrassing for his teenage self, and second, he was afraid of not getting a job. In one of his interviews

Carrigan stated:

"There was one point where I was doing a job and we had millions of viewers every week, it was a TV job, and I lost half my scalp and both eyebrows and the majority of my eyelashes."

The actor continued:

" I was covering up in order to look like this character. It was pretty terrifying to have to keep that secret and pretend like I looked this way, that I looked normal when I just didn't."

Eventually, after years of hiding his condition, Massachusetts-born actor Anthony decided to come clean.

He felt that hiding his condition worsened his confidence and made him more vulnerable.

"I eventually got to this place where I was proud of the way that I look. I thought that it was super cool and unique and strange and different. As soon as I embraced that and started carrying myself in that way, all of a sudden that's how everyone began to see me."

However, it was not an easy road for the Gotham actor. In an interview, Anthony opened up about his struggles to get proper roles following his disease.

He was even asked to quit acting.

"There was a moment where my alopecia had progressed so much so that I had lost pretty much half [of] my scalp, both my eyebrows [and] all my eyelashes," he said. "It really threw everyone that I was working with, and no one knew what to do with me."

The actor continued:

"I was told by a number of people, you're not going to be able to do this. You're not attractive anymore. You will fail if you try to do this," he said. "And I'm one of those people that if you told me that I can't do something, I will. Period."

Carrigan didn't give up in fact, the rejections made him stronger, and he worked harder. He began not hiding anymore and became more confident.

"It made me a better actor too because I wasn't hiding anymore," he said. "I wasn't hiding under wigs, or makeup, or this projected self-confidence, and instead what was replaced was real confidence."

Now, The Flash actor has a positive attitude toward his condition and proudly admits-" I love my alopecia; I rock it."
