"All it takes is for one of those people in that position of power to say that, and it ripples through," he explained. "So, yeah, of course, I thought that. Of course, I thought that in order to be happy I needed to be straight."

However, the Birdgerton star did not compromise his happiness and decided to come out to his family and friends. 

He was even ready to quit acting if it meant he could be himself.

"I reached a point where I thought, 'F— this,'" he said. "I'd much prefer to hold my boyfriend's hand in public or be able to put my own face picture on Tinder and not be so concerned about that than getting a part."

Likewise, in 2020, during his one-on-one with actor Ian McKellen, 

Bailey stated:

"I was coming to terms with my own sexuality, I hadn't necessarily hidden it, but I've never been not honest about it. It's just there had never been a need to talk about it. There's a sense of shame, I think, that's palpable throughout gay men within the industry."

As the world is again ready to witness Jonathan's romantic side in Bridgerton, one also wonders about his real-life romance. 

The actor has mentioned a few times his desire to hold the hands of his boyfriend out in public.

Jonathan Bailey has been active in the industry since 1995 and has been part of many successful films, television shows, and theatre.

He was enchanted by acting at the age of five when he saw a stage production of Oliver!. 

Bailey is a theatre boy who debuted at the age of seven in the 1995 Royal Shakespeare Company production of A Christmas Carol at the Barbican Theatre in London. 

He has also worked on Les Misérables, Girl with a Pearl Earring, American Psycho, and The Last Five Years.
