What Made Britley Ritz Become A Meteorologist?

When we see Britley Ritz literally putting her life in danger while covering extreme weather situations, we can see passion and determination in her eyes.

However, it was not always the same for her. In an interview, the reporter mentioned that she was terrified of storms and never imagined covering them one day.

She also mentioned that, though she was terrified, she was also curious about them and would read about them all the time.

Ritz finally decided to get rid of her phobia and started studying the weather, and we all know where she is today.

In her Q & A session with Storm Hour, she revealed her first memorable weather event and how terrified she was.

I was seven years old and I lived in Ohio at the time. A tornado touched down in my front yard. My mother told me to get into the master closet and she handed me a watch and told me not to leave until a specific time. From that moment on I was terrified of storms. Little did I know at the time, that the very event would make me the meteorologist that I am today.

In the same interview, she also talked about how she managed to get over her fear and change her career path.

I actually entered college as a drawing and graphic design major. I’m pretty good at art, but I’m a perfectionist and drive myself insane over a project. I was terrified of the math and physics behind meteorology. However, I always knew I was passionate about the weather.

She continued:

When I was younger I saw my first tornado and it terrified me. I would cry over a simple storm, but I wanted to get over that fear. So I started picking up books and reading about tornadoes. I joined a storm chase team in college to help. I then decided I wanted to see if I could tackle the meteorology classes. I took one and loved it. Changed my major and never looked back.

Our fear should never be the cause of our failure, and Britley Ritz's story is the best example.

She attended Ball State University, located in Muncie, Indiana, and majored in Meteorology and Climatology. She was the only woman in her class to graduate, and that made her even more focused on being the best among them.
