Estere Ciccone and her twin sister Stella Ciccone were born in Malawi on August 24, 2012. As of August 2022, they are nine years old.

Malawi is a small landlocked country in Southeastern Africa that was previously known as Nyasaland.

Her biological parents are Patricia and Adam Mwale from the Malawian community.

After Many Denials, Madonna Finally Accepted Adopting Twins In 2017

The 63-year-old pop sensation Madonna initially denied the adoption claims of Estere and Stella Ciccone.

The rumors started to float in late 2016, when  a Malawian government spokesperson revealed that, Like a Virgin, had "filed an application expressing interest" to adopt."

However, she denied the rumors with a statement stating:

"The rumors of an adoption process are untrue. "I am in Malawi to check on the children's hospital in Blantyre and my other work with Raising Malawi and then heading home."

The singer/songwriter's denial was maybe because she did not want extra media attention, which would create difficulties for her adoption.

Finally, in February 2017, she officially got the guardianship of her now-twin daughters,

The proud mother shared the happy news via Instagram with her first official photo with the twins.

She wrote:

'I Am Overjoyed That They Are Now Part of Our Family. I can officially confirm I have completed the process of adopting twin sisters from Malawi and am overjoyed that they are now part of our family."

She continued:

"I am grateful to all those in Malawi who helped make this possible, and I ask the media please to respect our privacy during a transitional time."

Why Madonna Was Criticized For Adopting Estere Ciccone?

The road to adoption was not easy for Madonna. The Malawi government law prevents non-residents from adopting children to take abroad.

However, the singer was granted an exception for which both she and the Alawi government were criticized.

The adoption case was held in the courtroom in Lilongwe in front of Estere’s biological father and Madonna.

Estere Ciccone's Biological Father, Adam Mwale, Claimed He Didn't Know His daughter's Adoption Was Permanent

Amidst the adoption process of Estere Ciccone and her sister, their biological father, Adam Mwale, a farmer, claimed that he had no idea that Madonna would take his daughters to the US forever.

In an exclusive interview with the Daily Mail, Mwale insisted and said that he believed the singer was only fostering the girls.

He said:

'I was told from the start that Esther and Stella were going to a rich woman's home abroad, that she would give them a good education, then return them to me, to live with me and help all of my family."

Mr. Adam also mentioned that the adoption people told him it would be a wonderful opportunity for his girls to have an education and a better life. But he had no clue that he was never seeing them again.

He also denied the claims of abandoning his kids for another woman. Mr. Mwale said he had been forced to listen to 'terrible lies' at the court trials.

Madonna, however, remained quiet on the matter and did not give any public statements regarding the claims of Estere Ciccone's birth father.

Banda is an aspiring football player, and he was the reason  Madonna moved to Portugal in 2017 as he signed with a junior football academy there.

The singer, in an interview, revealed that David is more like her than any of her kids.

She said:

"I'm pretty sure he got it from me. He's the one I have the most in common with. I feel like he gets me; he has more of my DNA than any of my children so far. Let's see what happens – it's still early days for everyone."

Mercy James

The Evita alum applied to adopt Chifundo "Mercy" James from Malawi in May 2009 but was rejected as she was not a resident of the country.

The singer re-applied on June 12, 2009; this time, the Supreme Court of Malawi granted her the right to adopt.

Mercy was born on January 22, 2006, and is now 16. She mostly stays away from the spotlight.
