Kiruthiha Kulendiren is known to the world as the mother of Tamil Canadian actress Maitreyi Ramakrishnan.

Maitreyi is an actress who grabbed headlines as Devi Vishwakumar in the popular Netflix series  Never Have I Ever.

Kulendiren immigrated to Canada as a refugee who fled unrest in Sri Lanka.

Kulendiren settled in Mississauga, Ontario, also known as the immigrant-majority city.

The Ramakrishnan family identifies themselves as Tamil Canadians rather than Sri Lankan.

They are very proud of their Tamil heritage, and Kiruthiha has made sure to pass it on to both her kids.

Maitreyi, in an interview, revealed that her parents have introduced her to Tamil culture and are extremely proud of it.

She also revealed why she and her family identifies as Tamil Canadians. 

The actress stated:

“I made it very clear to my agent and publicist that Tamil Canadian is very, very important to me ... my identity isn’t being Sri Lankan,” she said. “That’s not my country. My country is Canada. But my culture is definitely Tamil.”

Husband And Children

Kiruthiha Kulendiren is married to Ram Selvarajah. The couple reportedly tied the knot in the mid-1990s.

There are few details available about them as the family is quite private.

Kiruthiha and Ram have two children together. Their firstborn is a son named Vishwaa Ramakrishnan.

He is not into the entertainment business; however, his Instagram account tells us he is very much into music and playing guitars.

Maitreyi Ramakrishnan was born on December 29, 2001, in Mississauga, Ontario, Canada.

As of August 2022, she is 20 years old and stands at the height of 5' 6" (168 cm).

She attended Meadowvale Secondary School. Maitreyi deferred her acceptance to the York University in Toronto theatre program because of her lead role in  Never Have I Ever.

However, in 2021, due to a schedule conflict, she deferred her acceptance a second time and switched her major to human rights and equity studies.

Ramakrishnan gives credit for choosing human rights for her family, who were the victims of human inequality.

The 20-year-old, in an interview, stated:

"My parents always raised me (to believe): 'If you see an injustice, speak up. Don't be a bystander when you see someone facing injustice, or you are complicit.' So with that mentality, that's what I still just live and lead by."

The actress is known for her witty and outgoing nature. Time and again has made it clear that she will never compromise her identity and culture-starting with her name.

"If you can say the character names in "Game Of Thrones," you can say my Tamil name," says Ramakrishnan.

Rose To Stardom As Devi Vishwakumar On the Netflix series Never Have I Ever

Maitreyi Ramakrishnan made her acting debut with a BANG!!!!

She got the role of Devi Vishwakumar in Never Have I Ever, defeating 15,000 candidates and impressing actress/comedian Mindy Kaling.

She created her audition tape at a local library using her mom Kulendiren's camera.

Without any prior professional acting credit, Ramakrishnan got the biggest role at the age of 17.

Being a newcomer and Tamil Canadian, she brought huge media attention as it was groundbreaking for minorities. In 2019, Today named her one of eighteen "Groundbreakers."

Mindy Kaling's Never Have I Ever premiered on Netflix on April 27, 2020, amid the pandemic and received positive reviews from fans and critics.

In fact, Variety mentioned Maitreyi'sMaitreyi's performance as a breakout star. She received nominations for Independent Spirit Award, Canadian Screen Awards, and MTV Movie & TV Awards.

"One reason why I really liked the character, for me, personally, is just that I wasn't the best brown girl for the role; I just happened to be the best girl for the role."

"It wasn't like, ''Oh, you're the best out of all the South Asian women that we have thought of.'' No, it's just, ''You can do this; you encompass this character as her true form."
