Meet Martha Philpotts, Mother Of The Umbrella Academy Alum Elliot Page

Professionally a teacher, Martha Philpotts is best as the mother of Canadian actor and producer Elliot Page, formerly Ellen Page.

Page came out as transgender in December 2020. He was the first openly trans man to grace the cover of Time magazine's March 2021 issue. 

He came to the limelight at age ten, starring as Maggie Maclean in the CBC Television movie Pit Pony.

Page's popular movies and shows include X-Men films The Last Stand, Days of Future Past, Juno, Trailer Park Boys, Beyond: Two Souls, and The Umbrella Academy, among others.

He has received many accolades, including two BAFTA, Satellite Award, Oscar, and Emmy nominations.

Who Is Martha Philpotts? Know Elliot Page's Mother

Martha Philpotts was born in the 1950s to a minister. She was born into a religious household and followed strict values and norms.

Currently, she is in her 70s. Martha married Dennis Page, a graphic designer, in the 1980s.

The couple resided in Halifax, Nova Scotia. Their only child, Page, was born on February 21, 1987. He is currently 35 years old.

They enrolled their then-daughter in the Halifax Grammar School until grade 10 and then at Queen Elizabeth High School.

He later graduated from Shambhala School in 2005 and studied Interact Program at Vaughan Road Academy.

Elliot Page: Gender Transition

Actor/producer Page came out as transgender on December 1, 2020, on Instagram and revealed his new name Elliot and his pronouns he/they.

He wrote:

"Hi friends, I want to share with you that I am trans; my pronouns are he/they, and my name is Elliot."

The Juno star explained the reasons for him to come out partially were because of the COVID-19 pandemic and partially because of the anti-transgender rhetoric in politics.  

He further said:

"The truth is, despite feeling profoundly happy right now and knowing how much privilege I carry, I am also scared. I'm scared of the invasiveness, the hate, the 'jokes' and of violence".

He continued:

"The discrimination towards trans people is rife, insidious and cruel, resulting in horrific consequences."

The X-Men star showed his love and concern for the trans community in his coming-out statement.

"I love that I am trans. And I love that I am queer. "I see you, I love you, and I will do everything I can to change this world for the better."

Elliot appeared on the cover of Time Magazine in its March 2021 issue, making him the first openly trans man to do so.

He described his transition process as "not only life-changing but lifesaving."

Martha Philpotts Response To Elliot Page's Gender Identity

Identifying one's true self is always a scary experience, especially for trans youth fighting to understand and accept their body.

They have to deal with both mental and physical stress. During that time, parents' support is a huge deal.

Much research has shown trans kids having supportive parents are likely to have fewer mental illnesses, including depression and anxiety than non-supportive parents.

As far as Martha and Elliot are concerned. The actor in his Time Magazine interview revealed that his mother was a huge supporter.

"I'm just so proud of my son!" says Martha.

"She wants me to be who I am and supports me fully," Page told TIME.

However, this full support didn't happen all at once. Being brought up in the 50s at a minister's house, Martha understandably had a different approach at the beginning.

In fact, Page remembered how his mother asked him to act more femininely as a child because she felt that was what was best for him.

Elliot also revealed that at the age of nine, "I felt like a boy... I wanted to be a boy. I would ask my mom if I could be someday".

However, everything changed when he started his acting career and had to look and act a certain way.

He only gathered enough courage to be himself later in life, and up to that time, Martha was also in a state where she could accept her child no matter what.

The mother-daughter duo shares a special bond now and has come a long way together.

As for his personal life, Elliot Page married Canadian professional dancer and choreographer Emma Portner in an intimate ceremony.

They revealed about the marraige in January 2018. The couple reportedly met after Portner discovered her on Instagram.

Emma publicly supported Page when he emerged as a trans man in 2020.

Sadly, the duo separated in the summer of 2020, and Elliot filed for divorce in January 2021.

Their divorce was finalized in early 2021.
