Payton and Montgomery first met at a Saints-Panthers game when the latter was a nurse living in Charlotte, North Carolina.

It was the pregame ceremony, and Montgomery asked Payton for some tickets for her and some co-workers for the game.

Later, he enrolled at Eastern Illinois University, winning a football scholarship to play quarterback.

During his playing career, Sean was drafted to Chicago Bruisers, Pittsburgh Gladiators, Chicago Bears, and Leicester Panthers.

Payton started his coaching career in 1988 as an offensive assistant at San Diego State University.
