The Bahraini-born actress became interested in acting after watching the 1992 satirical black comedy film, Death Becomes Her.
She started her acting career appearing in minor roles in 2006, where she used to be credited with her full name, May El Calamawy.
In her initial days, May appeared in shows like Thursday, Temperance, Santa Claus in Baghdad, Paradise Falls, Djinn, Moi Aussi Je t'aime, etc.
It was only in 2013 when she finally got her first major film Djinn. Afterward, in 2014, she changed her name to May Calamawy,
Later, in 2017, Calamawy portrayed the roles of Faiza in The Long Road Home, Mina Bayoud in The Brave, and Ameena in BKPI.
